CEO David Van Slingerland at Vaughan’s Health & Innovation Forum

Last week, the Vaughan Chamber of Commerce hosted a forum on The Future of Health and Innovation, aimed at shaping a vision for the city’s vibrant healthcare ecosystem. The event came the day after York University announced plans to open a new medical school in Vaughan.

Sterling Industries’ CEO David Van Slingerland took part in a panel discussion on the importance of three key pillars: medical science, technology and data, while fostering collaboration between hospitals, universities and innovative medical technology startups. As a leader in the medical device contract manufacturing space, Van Slingerland brought an important industry voice to the discussion.

Van Slingerland emphasized the critical role that Medtech companies like Sterling Industries will play in transforming Vaughan into a leading healthcare hub. “Our team of engineers and production specialists work hand-in-hand with innovators, researchers and startups to transform the latest breakthroughs in medical science into tangible products that improve patient outcomes,” he explained. “Having a top medical school alongside a leading hospital like Mackenzie Health in our backyard is incredibly exciting for research and innovation.”

Van Slingerland also stressed the importance of the industry’s shift towards collaboration and outsourcing. “In the last 10 years,” noted Van Slingerland, “we’ve seen a shift away from in-house R&D and manufacturing by larger OEMs towards a combination of nimble outsourcing alongside strategic investment in fast-moving startups and scaleups.”
